Notre Dame, Lapeer Split DH

Notre Dame Varsity Softball (20-9) split a doubleheader with Lapeer, winning the first game in come-from-behind fashion 4-2 and falling in the second 9-6.

Lauren Koenig was the winning pitcher in the opening contest, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits. The Lightning got things started in the first as they put three hits together to push the first run of the game across the plate. Lapeer added ton the lead in the second inning without benefit of a hit, scoring on an error, ground out, wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. The Irish scored all of their runs in the fourth inning. Kara Thornton led off with a double, Elena Schwegman followed with a infield hit and Koenig hit what would have been a sacrifice fly that was dropped to put the Irish on the board. Meaghan Orlowski and Ella Easterwood followed with doubles to plate three more runs for the Irish.

The nightcap was all Lapeer as they scored twice in the first on three hits, once in the fourth on a solo blast, four in the fifth including a two-run home run and a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Notre Dame was unable to score until the final inning when the Irish strung five hits together to score six runs and put the tying run at the plate. Koenig and Smith each had a pair of hits including a double. Orlowski, Thornton and Easterwood had a run producing singles and each scored once. Schwegman had a bases loaded triple to drive in three. Smith took her first loss of the season giving up nine runs on 13 hits while striking out six.
