Notre Dame debuts sports broadcasting club at basketball game

With the red-hot Davison Cardinals boys basketball team coming into Notre Dame’s gym on Wednesday to play the Fighting Irish, NDP students on the school’s new sports broadcasting team decided it was as good of time as any to put the game on air.

Started initially by the school’s Varsity Club, the new “broadcast club” currently consists of seniors Luke Adams, Adam Sadowski, Noah Ford, Will Gurzick, Alex Shimoon, Ryan Collins, Andy Carpenter and junior Tommy Cavanaugh.

Turns out the decision to broadcast Wednesday’s game was fortuitous as both the broadcast and basketball teams performed admirably with Irish basketball defeating the then one-loss Cardinals, 84-79.

Coach Whitney Robinson called the win “the best win by far so far this season,” and we couldn’t agree more.

We also couldn’t agree more about the fact that the broadcast team put on a nearly flawless performance behind the microphones.

Luke Adams, who produced the show, said the play-by-play team of Adam Sadowski and Noah Ford did a great job.

“Adam and Noah were chosen for on-air work because they were among the founders of the club, plus their desire to get into broadcasting as a possible career, plus their general knowledge of the game of basketball,” Adams said.

Notre Dame’s broadcast club is being assisted by Meridix, a company out of Naperville, Illinois, that it says “empowers any small sports team to broadcast like the pros.”

Tyler Feret, founder and CEO of Meridix, says once you connect a few smartphones, tablets, or laptops around a game, teams are live-streamed as if they were on ESPN. “We maximize the capabilities of the equipment teams already own, so our platform is affordable and accessible to any size team,” he said.

Adams, who also manages the technology, transitions, advertisements, and “makes sure everything goes smoothly” for the club, said they hope to broadcast at least one game a week, and it could be any of the various teams playing in any given season.

“The games also are archived for later listening and game stats are posted live to theirishthunder.com website during each contest,” he said.

All broadcasts will be available on theirishthunder.com.
