Notre Dame Varsity Volleyball defeated Cranbrook in straight sets 25-10, 25-11, 25-9 to win their 12th straight MHSAA district title and their 21st overall in the program’s 25-year history. The Irish got out to early leads in all three sets and never looked back.
The trio of seniors for Notre Dame, including Miss Volleyball finalists Maddy Chinn and Natalie Risi led the Irish squad. Maria Famularo was lights out from the service line, scoring a match-high 20 points including 10 aces. Famularo also had 19 assists, four kills and nine digs. Chinn hit at a .500 pace, collecting six kills, three blocks, five service points and seven digs while Risi scored five point from the line, had nine kills, and six digs. With the win the senior class became the only class to record two 60 win seasons and set a record with their 222nd match win overall.
While the seniors were leading the way, the underclassmen also had strong showings. Freshman attacker/setter Aly Borellis dished out 10 assists, had a match-high 10 kills, scored seven points from the service line and finished with two aces and six digs. Sophomore Olivia Kowalkowski scored seven with three aces and a game-high 12 digs. Junior Emily Mohr added four kills, two blocks and a pair of digs.
Notre Dame now advances to the MHSAA Regional round starting on Tuesday where the Irish will take on Marysville.
