Irish Take Opener From Athens

The Notre Dame Varsity Softball team opened the 2019 season with a 6-2 win over Troy Athens.

Picking up the win for the Irish was junior Lauren Koenig, who went four innings yielding only one hit. Jordan Smith picked up the save, going the final three innings while giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits.

Koenig helped her cause at the plate going two-for-two plus a sacrifice fly, scoring twice and driving in four runs. Meaghan Orlowski added a pair of hits while Elena Schwegman had a hit and scored a run. Ella Easterwood picked up a hit, scored a run and made a pair of fine plays in centerfield. Senior shortstop Kara Thornton drove in a run and scored a pair for the Irish.
