Irish Take Mount Morris Title

Notre Dame Varsity Volleyball improved to 33-8-2 as they won the Mount Morris tournament, their third tournament title of the season. The Irish went 6-0 without dropping a set on the day.

Notre Dame opened play with a 25-22, 25-14 victory over Grosse Pointe South.  Josie Bloom scored 10 serving points (including two aces) and had a team-high eight digs.  Sophia Sudzina added 11 kills followed by Aly Borellis with six kills and Theresa Carrier with five. Freshmen Grace Wenaas, starting her first varsity match, contributed six kills and three blocks in the win.

Notre Dame next defeated Bay City Central 25-13, 25-14.  Emily Mohr scored 10 serving points, including six aces, and Margo Sudzina was right behind her with nine points and three aces. Borellis led the offense with 10 kills and six digs while Carrier added 9 kills. Bloom once again played well on defense with eight digs and Olivia Kowalkowski added six digs to go with three service aces.

In their third match of the day the Irish defeated Brandon 25-10, 25-17.  Borellis had eight points, two aces, nine kills, a block and seven digs to lead the way. Sara Nouhan and Sophia Sudzina added five kills each while Bloom had 7 digs. Allison Berent added four digs and five points.

The final match in pool play saw the Irish defeat Oscoda 25-7, 25-6. Carrier had 10 kills and three digs, Borellis had five kills, a block and three digs and Abby Nellis had a pair of kills and a team-high three blocks. Margo Sudzina scored seven points with four aces andadded four digs. Bloom kept her fine defensive effort going with nine digs to go with five points and three aces.

For the fourth time this season Notre Dame came out of pool play as the overall number one seed going into the Gold playoff bracket where the Irish met up with longtime rival Marysville.  Notre Dame took the semifinal matchup 25-17, 25-13.  Carrier contributed nine kills and four digs and Borellis had eight kills and four digs. Wenaas had her best match of the day with seven kills and four digs. Bloom pitched in with 12 digs and nine points, including three more aces and Kowalkowski had seven points, four aces and 12 digs.

The championship match saw the two only two undefeated teams of the tournament face off as Notre Dame took on Cadillac. The Irish saved their best defensive effort for the title match and came away with a 25-15, 25-19 victory and the tournament title.  Borellis added 10 kills, two blocks and seven digs to her team leading offensive totals while Sophia Sudzina and Carrier each added seven kills.  Berent scored 11 points, two aces and five digs. The defensive duo of Bloom and Kowalkowski finished with 10 and nine digs respectively.
