Irish Go Unbeaten at Williamston Invite

The Notre Dame Varsity Volleyball team went undefeated at the Williamston Invite, taking the tournament title amongst the 16-team field without dropping a set.

The Irish opened pool play with a 25-15, 25-13 win over Haslett. Leading the way was Aly Borellis (nine kills, four blocks, 14 assists, nine digs, five serving points, three aces), Sophia Sudzina and Grace Wenaas each added four kills while Olivia Kowalkowski had 14 digs. Allison Berent had nine digs and Josie Bloom had six digs, five service points and two aces.

Notre Dame defeated Lansing Catholic 25-14, 25-17 in the second match. It was Borellis again leading the charge with nine kills, two blocks, 19 assists and 12 digs. Theresa Carrier and Wenaas each had  seven kills and a pair of blocks.  Margo Sudzina pitched in nine assists, Kowalkowski had 13 digs, seven points and three aces and Bloom had nine digs and 15 points.

The Irish came away with a 25-17, 25-11 win over Grand Ledge in the final match of pool play. Borellis contributed 10 kills, a pair of blocks and 15 assists while Carrier and Sophia Sudzina had seven kills. Margo Sudzina had 14 assists, Kowalkowski finished with nine digs, and Bloom added four more aces and six points.

Notre Dame qualified for the Gold Bracket and took on Mason, earning a 25-17, 25-15 win. Borellis had 11 kills, four blocks, 13 assists and eight digs.  Carrier had five kill and Emily Mohr had five kills, five points and a block. Wenaas finished with four kills to round out the offense.Bloom was solid on defense with nine digs and no errors to go with seven points and Kowalkowski had eight digs and Margo Sudzina added 13 assists.

Dame topped Onsted 25-20, 25-19 in the semifinal. Borellis continued her strong play with 10 kills, seven digs and 19 assists. Carrier added eight kills and Margo Sudzina had 11 assists. Kowalkowski had a solid defensive game with 22 digs while Bloom added 11 digs to go with seven points and three more aces.

In the finals, Notre Dame came away with a 25-18, 25-16 win over Birch Run.  Carrier saved her best game for last as Carrier hit a career-high .579 with 12 kills. Borellis added 10 kills, two blocks, 18 assists and 12 digs. Sophia Sudzina had seven kills, Kowalkowski was once again strong on defense with 14 digs and Bloom and Berent each added six digs.
