The Notre Dame Varsity Softball team went 2-1 at the Troy Athens Invitational to improve to 12-3 on the season.

The Irish dropped the opening game of the day 9-4 to Rochester. Lauren Koenig took the loss giving up nine runs (six earned) on 10 hits. Elena Schwegman went two-for-three, scoring twice and driving in a run.  Schwegman opened the game with a blast over the right center field fence and later scored after a double.  Kara Thornton had a double and a sacrifice to drive in a pair of runs.

Notre Dame took on Country Day in the second game. Once again the Irish took the early lead as Schwegman led off the bottom of the first with a double. Thornton (two-for-two) sacrificed her to third and freshman Jordan Smith (two-for-three) drove her home. The Yellowjackets came back to score in the second and fifth to take a 3-1 lead but the Irish responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth.  Schwegman was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a Thornton single. Koenig was then hit by a pitch and the Irish executed a double steal, putting runners on second and third. Smith delivered a two-run single to plate the tying and what proved to be the game-winning runs. Koenig picked up the win, giving up three unearned runs while striking out five and struck out 5.

Notre Dame took on Utica in the final game of the day. The Irish started out strong as they plated three runs in the first inning  on consecutive hitsby Thornton, Koenig, Smith and Meaghan Orloski. The Chieftains answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first.  The Irish plated two2 more runs in the fourth courtesy of a two-run double by Thornton. The Irish looked take a commanding lead in the fifth after scoring a pair of run and loading the based with one out, but a double play ended the rally leaving the Irish with a 7-2 lead.  The double play seemed to spark Utica as they strung together four hits to cut the lead 7-5. The Irish responded with a pair of runs on to push the lead to 9-5.  Utica put a couple of runners on in the sixth but Notre Dame was able to shut the door and secure the win.
