The Notre Dame Girls Varsity Soccer team claimed an MHSAA District title with a 2-1 win over Brandon High School.
Despite a number of shots on goal and corner kicks early in the game the teams remained tied 0-0 heading into halftime. The Irish were finally able to break through with 27:04 remaining in the second half when Justina Gaynor scored from the top of the box to give Notre Dame a 1-0 lead. Itala Gemelli would add an important insurance marker with 7:23 left, scoring off of a deflection to put the Irish up by 2. Brandon refused to go away as the Blackhawks would cut the lead to 2-1 with 1:02 remaining but Notre Dame was able to hang on in the final minute for the win.
“A win is a win at this point in time” said head coach Jim Stachura. “It’s survive and advance and you just take one at a time”.
The Irish (16-3-3) advance to MHSAA Regional play where they will take on Warren Regina.
