Boosting school athletes

Notre Dame’s Booster Club continues to contribute to Irish athletics in big ways.

Each year, the Notre Dame athletics Booster Club helps the school’s many different sports teams in a number of important ways, not the least of which is raising money. But just as critical, volunteering by parents is an important component of the school’s athletic functions.

Parent volunteers are necessary to provide NDPMA’s student athletes with a huge variety of opportunities. The Booster Club typically requires families to work at least three Booster Club-sanctioned events per season, per athlete.

“Many families go far above this minimum requirement, and the Booster Club is extremely grateful for their commitment to making the school and our athletic programs a success,” said Booster Club president Tom Fazio. “We work very closely with our athletic department to ensure this continuing success. And we definitely love our parent volunteers!”

The Booster Club also helps with fields, equipment – just about everything and anything athletic. Even more important, the Booster Club is responsible for organizing volunteers to work all athletic events, saving the school thousands of dollars that would have to be paid to staff these events if parents didn’t help out.

“The Booster Club is vital to our programming, raising $50-$70,000 each year and saving the school at least three times that amount in working the various events,” said Betty Wroubel, Notre Dame’s athletic director and assistant principal.

Though the tuition contract for the school year specifies an opt-out fee for those families choosing not to work these volunteer hours, according to Fazio, it is the goal of the Booster Club to have 100% of school families work their volunteer hours.

“The school, community and students really count on volunteer support,” Fazio said. “It is impossible to provide such a variety of athletic events without the support of all these great parents!”
