At the MHSAA Division 2 Regional held at South Lyon East High School, Notre Dame’s track and field teams qualified 12 athletes for the state finals, including four individual regional champions across five events. In addition, new standards were set as four NDP records were broken. The all-senior sprint relay team of Aidan Schurig, Patrick Anger, Brendan O’Sullivan, and Matthew Durkin continued their record setting ways by breaking their own recently set school records in the 4x100m and 4x200m relays. Their time of 43.83 was good for second place in the 4x100m, and in the 4x200m, 1:32.05 yielded a fourth place result. Schurig now has his name on the school record board for four different relay events, including the 4x400m and 4x800m relays set in 2015. Anger also competed in the long jump and finished as the regional champion in the event with a jump of 19’ 9.25”. Durkin advanced to the final in the 200m dash and earned a medal with a fifth place finish in 23.39. Durkin also placed fourth in the high jump with a jump of 5” 10”. Senior Nathan Mylenek was a double regional champion by winning both the 1600m and 3200m runs. In each event, Mylenek finished well ahead of the field, winning the1600m run by nearly 80m. Mylenek’s 1600m time, 4:18.07, breaks the school record set by Chris Burns in 2010 Other notable performances for the Irish included junior John Paul Terzano, second in the discus with a toss of 130’ 3”, senior Andrew Durkin, seventh in the 110m hurdles in 17.13, and junior Brendan Fraser, second in the 1600m run in 4:29.80 and third in the 3200m run in 9:49.89. For the girls, senior Claire Bolden captured a regional championship in the 400m dash with a time of 58.06. Bolden followed that up with a second place in the 200m dash in 26.06. Earlier in the day, though, Bolden broke her own school record in the distance with a 25.98 in the prelims. Sophomore Lauren Neiheisel is a first time regional champion by winning the 800m run in 2:24.22. Bolden and Neiheisel were joined by senior Lauren Kavanagh and sophomore Maddie Scherle in the 4x400m dash to place second in 4:22.44. Freshman Lexie Case surprised everyone with a second place finish in the 1600m run in 5:27.63 and sixth in the 800m run in 2:37.56. Freshman Bridgette Joslin medaled in two events, an eight place finish in the 1600m run in 6:11.12 and fourth in the 3200m run in 13:05.91. Sophomore Abby Rankin was sixth in the 3200m run in 13:13.65. In relays, the 4x100m team of freshman Katelyn Kozole, senior Chanel Dore, freshman Paige Gollinger, and senior Caitlin Fitzgerald was fifth in 53.63 and Kozole, Gollinger, Fitzgerald, and sophomore Destiny Sandle teamed up to place sixth in the 4x200m in 1:53.74. In field events, senior Jessica Ratliff placed sixth in both the shot put and discus with throws of 27” 10” and 90’ 5”, respectively. Scherle was fifth in the long jump at 14’ 0.5”. Advancing to the State Finals are Bolden, Neiheisel, Kavanagh, Scherle, Case, Anger, O’Sullivan, Shurig, Durkin, Fraser, Terzano, and Mylenek. In team results, the boys finished fourth and the girls were fifth. The MHSAA Division 2 State Finals are scheduled for Saturday, June 4th at Zeeland East High School in Zeeland.
