Notre Dame Prep places second at home tourney

PONTIAC – Pontiac Notre Dame Prep couldn’t catch up with Capac, but the Fighting Irish did manage a 4-1 record and a second place finish behind Capac Saturday at the Notre Dame Prep Duals.

The Irish defeated Dearborn, Sterling Heights, University of Detroit Jesuit and Clarkston’s B team during the tournament.

“Today was the (highest) peak we’ve been as a team since I’ve been here,” said Irish coach Ian McClain, in his fourth year at the helm. “I’ve seen us excel each week.”

David Pohlman (215) and Joey Agro (145) each finished with 5-0 records with Agro notching his 100th career victory.

Teammates were enthusiastic about the feat, perhaps to an uncomfortable degree. But it was all in fun as Agro tried to temper the celebration as teammates showed their appreciation. “Get off me, give my mom a hug,” laughed Agro, who was feeling swell.

While the program has struggled in the past, Agro stuck with the practices and the competition.

“I put in a lot of work to reach a goal I’ve been working for, it’s really rewarding,” said Agro. “I was just really fluid today. (And) I’m glad I could do it at home.”
